Pocahontas History Project Fundraising Scheme Details

The Pocahontas History Project is an overarching name for a set of journeys, events, projects and programs created to honor Pocahontas and inspired by the international attention to the 400th anniversary of her passing in England in March, 1617.  The Virginia Delegation traveling in March 2017 to Richmond upon Thames and Gravesend is the formal first step for the Pocahontas History Project, as well as for a concerted community effort to create a global community of Richmond, starting by strengthening the twinning relationship between the RVA and our namesake, Richmond upon Thames.  Before, during and especially after the trip to England, delegation members and a growing number of Richmonders will become engaged in four programs that will become Pocahontas legacy projects:

  • Pocahontas History Project
    • A multi-dimensional education and social development endeavor using the power of the past to change our collective future, concentrating on the rippling historical and social implications of the life of Pocahontas (see description in above link).
  • Richmonds of the World (ROTW) programming at Franklin Military Academy (FMA)
    • Establishing FMA as the epicenter of the ROTW effort for Richmond Public Schools and the RVA
      • Creation of a ROTW Club at FMA
      • Furthering the school-to-school twinning relationship between FMA and Grey Court School in Richmond upon Thames
      • Furthering the effort to connect the RVA to other Richmonds with the 5 Richmonds Twinning project
  • James River Park System (JRPS) Student Service Learning Project
    • Working with Richmond Public School students, starting at Franklin Military Academy, to develop a service learning program that intersects students with the James River and the James River Park System, with an emphasis on supporting and maintaining the JRPS Trail system
  • James River Park System / Thames Landscape Strategy Twinning relationship
    • Involving students in both Richmonds to further the longstanding, mutually beneficial partnership between organizations that are critical to the future of the James River and the River Thames

Fundraising Objectives > We are hoping to raise at least $42,500

Replenish Richmond LLC will manage the Fundraising Scheme for the needs of the Pocahontas History Project, which include funding the majority of the costs of the trip to Richmond upon Thames for Delegation members (each delegation member is asked to raise $500 towards their costs) and providing initial funding for the four Pocahontas legacy projects.  The combined trip costs are estimated to be $17,500 and the goal for the four legacy projects is $25,000 = $6,250 per program.  Therefore the minimum fundraising objective for the Pocahontas History Project is $42,500 with all additional funding being split evenly between the four Pocahontas legacy projects.  Fundraising will continue through the Richmond Day event, May 24, 2017.

  • Trip funding for 14 people = FMA + Tatnall (8), JRPS (3), Eastern Chickahominy (3)
    • Estimated trip costs = $1750 each less $500 (paid per person)  = $1,250 @ 14 = $17,500
      • Trip costs to include:
        • Airfare from Dulles
        • Bus service to and from Dulles
        • Buses and transportation in England
        • Meals not covered by events and homestays
        • Gifts for home stay hosts
        • Passports for FMA students
